Iceland 2000
Gullfoss and Geysir

Sunday, 16th July, 2000
We travelled by bus early on the Sunday morning to Gullfoss. The rain fell incessantly all the way. Then, as we arrived, it stopped.
Gullfoss is impressive. And beautiful too. There's no wonder it's called the "Golden Waterfall". We spent about an hour wondering around seeing it from all angles, before boarding the bus back to Geysir. It was raining again, but the wind had died down. We watched Strokkur erupt several times, once three times in quick succession, and wondered around the boiling waterholes, before eating in the café.
No one had told us that the great Geysir had started to erupt again after a ninety year break after the earthquakes the previous month. However, we would have had to have stood watching it for about eight hours to be sure of seeing it.
We headed off in the early evening cycling towards Gullfoss. Our cycling tour proper had begun. We stayed that night at Brekkholt, a small house near Geysir within walking distance of a nice restaurant where we stocked up on the calories for tomorrow's trip.
